What is Wood Ash?
Wood ash is the powdery residue remaining after the combustion of wood, such as burning wood in a fireplace, bonfire, or an industrial power plant. It is largely composed of calcium compounds along with other non-combustible trace elements present in the wood. It has been used for many purposes throughout history.
Why use wood ash fertilizer in your garden?
Wood ash is rich in potassium, phosphorus, and calcium. Potassium and phosphorus are the main ingredients for plant health and growth. Calcium is the main ingredient for fruiting and flowering plants, as well as for a sturdy root system. Ash is alkaline, so adding wood ash to your soil can help balance the pH of acidic soils.
The use of wood ash as a fertilizer helps with improving soil quality, stimulating microbial activity, and adding calcium to the soil. Allowing plants to better access nutrients in the soil through improved root growth.
Where does your wood ash come from?
Our wood ash originates from wood that is burned in households or industrial wood burning stoves. The species of wood are primarily common hardwoods found in Southern Ontario, like Maple, Ash, Oak, Beech and Birch.
How is Wood Ash Different than Other Types of Ash?
Wood ash is more alkaline than other types of ash, and is composed of carbon, iron, potassium, and magnesium.
What is the typical pH of wood ash?
Wood Ashes contain alkaline chemicals with a pH of 10 to 12.
Use wood ash to reduce acidic soil to the ideal target of around 6.5 for your garden plants.
How much should I use?
Applications of wood ash are generally limited to a maximum of 15 to 20 pounds (approximately a five gallon pail) per 1000 sq. ft., per year.
So one 500g box of Kick Ash will cover up to 50 sq. ft. of soil.
Spread wood ash evenly over the area to be treated (e.g., vegetable garden bed, established perennial flowerbed, lawn or other landscape area). You can also mix with water for cleaner and easier applicaitons indoors.
How do I apply wood ash?
Apply only the amount of wood ash recommended based on a soil fertility test and based on the nutrient needs of the plants that you intend to grow in the treated area. Applying excessive amounts can lead to nutrient toxicity and/or nutrient deficiency issues in plants.
Because wood ash particles are very fine and can easily be blown by the wind, avoid making applications when it is windy. Whenever possible, apply wood ash to moist soil. Where feasible (e.g., in a vegetable garden), work the ash into the soil using a rototiller, spade or rake in early spring.
How do I safely handle Wood Ash?
Due to its alkalinity, wood ash can potentially pose a health risk if handled carelessly. When working with ash, be sure to wear appropriate protective clothing (e.g., long pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves, eye goggles, dust mask) to limit exposures that might lead to skin, eye or respiratory irritation.
